How do metal detectors work?
Metal detectors operate on the principle of electromagnetic induction. A transmitter coil integrated into the device generates a low-frequency magnetic field that penetrates the ground. When this field encounters a metallic object, eddy currents are induced within the metal, which in turn generate a measurable counter-field. A receiver coil detects this change and passes the signal for evaluation. Depending on the device class, modern discrimination algorithms can additionally differentiate between ferrous metals, non-ferrous metals, and other material types – a decisive advantage when searching for specific buried components.
Advantages in civil and road construction
Metal detectors enable fast and precise localisation of buried metallic components such as valve caps, manhole covers, boundary markers, valve rods, and other metallic fittings – even when they are covered, contaminated, or no longer visible. Depending on the model, detection depths ranging from several decimetres to a few metres are achievable. Acoustic and visual signal output allows efficient operation directly on site without specialist personnel. Robust housings and long battery capacities ensure reliability in daily outdoor use.
Typical areas of application
Metal detectors are used to locate valve caps and manhole covers in road and pavement areas, to localise boundary markers and survey points, and to find valve rods and metallic fittings in the ground. They support civil engineering, utility, and municipal operations during maintenance and repair work and are an indispensable tool for any organisation working regularly with buried infrastructure.
