RD8200 Cable and Pipe Locator
RD8200 Cable and Pipe Locator
Precision locating device for the fast and safe detection of buried infrastructure.
The most advanced RD8200™ locator series is based on over 45 years of Radiodetection development tradition: performance, quality, and reliability. With its unique arrangement of five specially designed, precision-machined antennas, it enables you to choose the optimal level of accuracy for each task.
With increasing infrastructure complexity, locating professionals require more powerful and flexible tools. Features such as Current Direction (CD) and iLOC, combined with the versatile Tx transmitter series, provide highly responsive locating even under the most challenging conditions.
Specifically developed for applications in dense infrastructure environments where signals from high-voltage systems, substations, and cables can overlap and cause confusion. Dynamic Overload Protection reduces the impact of interference, while Power Filters™ can determine whether a strong electrical signal originates from a single source or from a cluster of multiple cables.
Additionally, the receiver includes higher frequencies to locate high-impedance cables in densely packed (paired) bundles, and sonde frequencies for tracing protective ducts and conduits. Higher frequencies can also be used to trace shielded cables without earth bonding. Furthermore, this receiver is suitable for locating signals from cathodic protection systems (CPS), which are commonly used for pipelines.
Faults on cable shielding or earth-sensitive multi-core plastic cables can be located to within 4" (10 cm) using the 8 kHz sheath fault-finding method together with a Radiodetection frame antenna. Additionally, faults on CPS-protected pipelines can be located using the CDFF (Current Direction Sheath Fault) method.
Due to the high number of selectable locating frequencies, the receiver represents the most selective cable locating solution on the market.
With four sonde frequencies, the receiver can be used to locate deep-lying pipelines made from various materials such as cast iron, clay, concrete, and brick.

Peak+™ Mode
Accuracy combined with speed
Combine the accuracy of peak locating with fast surveying using the directional arrows in the new Peak+™ mode. With a single button press, check for distortions by directly comparing null and peak.
Power Filters™
Locate and distinguish between power cables (PL models)
If a signal transmitter cannot be connected, tracking individual power cables in complex networks becomes a real challenge. Conflicting or strong signals intertwine or overlap, creating a flood of signals.
With a single button press, the harmonics of the 50Hz power signal are used to determine whether a signal originates from a single source or from multiple cables, allowing you to track and mark them.
TRUDEPTH™
Indicates depth when the locator is correctly aligned over the target cable, pipe, or sonde for maximum accuracy.
StrikeAlert™
StrikeAlert warns users of potentially shallow-buried cables and utilities (reduced coverage), in both Power and Active Line modes. Although regulations require utility cables to be buried below a certain depth, unexpectedly shallow cables remain a common cause of cable strikes.
Automatic usage data logging with GPS positioning
GPS-enabled RD8200 receivers automatically record all key locating parameters every second to provide a complete picture of each locate and enable data evaluation over one year or longer.
The collected data can be used to ensure best working practices or to identify training needs before bad habits develop. Additionally, the information can be used for internal audits, shared with stakeholders to improve processes, or provided to clients as evidence of completed work. Usage data can be exported in multiple formats – for example, KML for Google Maps to verify where and when the work took place.
Current Direction (CD)
A powerful tool that helps users distinguish the target line from nearby conductors. With CD, you can quickly identify your target line and avoid wasting time tracing a wrong line through surrounding alternating fields of different origins.
Automatic usage data logging with GPS positioning
GPS-enabled RD8200 receivers automatically capture key locating parameters every second, creating a comprehensive overview of each locate and enabling long-term performance analysis.
The generated data can be used to enforce best practices, identify training needs, conduct internal audits, or provide documentation to customers. Data can be exported in formats such as KML for Google Maps.
Trace high-impedance utilities with 4 kHz and CD
The 4 kHz frequency was designed for tracing high-impedance conductors such as twisted-pair telecom cables or street lighting cables. Since these utilities are often found in tightly packed environments, you can combine 4 kHz with CD to ensure you follow the correct line.
Follow lines quickly in Guidance Mode
Guidance Mode enables rapid route tracing of underground utilities. Intuitive proportional direction arrows, a “needle” direction indicator, and differentiated audio signals guide you along the target pipe or cable.
Fault Find (sheath fault location)
Combine your RD8200 receiver with a frame antenna (accessory) to locate insulation faults on cable sheaths or insulated pipelines with pinpoint accuracy up to 10 cm.
Customize your receiver to your network frequencies
Up to five additional frequencies can be programmed into any RD8200 receiver to adapt the locator to your network’s specific signals.
iLOC
iLOC is an advanced Bluetooth link between the RD8200 receiver and the Bluetooth-enabled transmitter, allowing you to adjust signal strength and frequency from up to 450 m away. Less walking, more locating time.
