SPRINGBOK Cable Measurement Technology – TDR Cable Location
SPRINGBOKhttps://springbokinstruments.com/
Springbok Instruments is a US manufacturer of test and measurement equipment for copper and low-voltage power cables. Based on time-domain reflectometry (TDR), the brand provides handy, rugged devices for cable fault location and length measurement – with modern touchscreen operation and wireless connectivity. “Made in the USA” stands for quality and practical usability in everyday field work across telecommunications, the electrical trades and power distribution.
At SEMPERDEAL you receive Springbok Instruments with sound advice, instruction and, on request, an on-site demonstration. As an official service point, we handle maintenance and repairs in-house so your measuring equipment is quickly ready for use again.

Repair & Service0
Do you offer calibration?
As an official service point, we offer calibration for cable locators, leak detection and measuring devices. For a large proportion of the devices sold on the market, we issue corresponding certificates. You'll find more information on our Service & Repairs page and at service@cft.at.
Can I get a loan device during the repair?
Who do I contact for technical problems?
Do you offer repairs?
Yes, we offer repair services for most of the appliances in our range. Please submit a repair request directly via our repair request form or contact us at kontakt@semperdeal.com.

Where can I find my device's serial number?
How do I register a repair?
The easiest way to register a repair is via our digital repair request form, which guides you step by step. Alternatively, email us at service@semperdeal.com with the device type, serial number and a description of the fault. You'll then receive an RMA number and shipping instructions.
How do I properly clean and store my devices?

How are waveforms stored on the SPRINGBOK TRACKER STD and PRO and transferred to a PC or smartphone?SPRINGBOK
With the Tracker Store function, the instrument saves the full waveform at the touch of a button, regardless of what is on screen; the TRACKER PRO cycles through all of its pulse widths in the process. Stored waveforms can be recalled on the instrument or downloaded – both models have USB and Bluetooth 4.0. In the TrackerView software for Windows and the app for iOS and Android, waveforms can be named and annotated, VOP, gain and range changed, pulse widths stepped through, cursors moved, distances and dBRL measured, and waveforms printed together with comments.

Which device is right for my application?
Which pulse width should you start with when locating faults with the SPRINGBOK TRACKER PRO?SPRINGBOK
Always with the shortest pulse width available, because the fault may be only a short distance away. Use the range (zoom) and gain controls to search the trace; if the fault is not found, switch to the next larger pulse width and test again until it is located. Wider pulses transmit more energy and therefore travel further down the cable, while a higher vertical gain makes smaller reflections visible.
How do you set the correct VOP on the SPRINGBOK TRACKER PRO?SPRINGBOK
The VOP value depends on the cable's dielectric and changes with temperature, age and humidity; even new cable can vary by as much as ±3%. The cable manufacturer can provide the value, or it can be determined on a cable of known length:
- Measure a cable of known length – the longer the cable, the more accurate the result.
- Place the cursors on the output pulse and on the reflection from the cable end.
- Adjust the VOP until the distance between the cursors equals the known length.
To pinpoint a fault accurately, it is advisable to measure from both cable ends to the fault: if the sum of the two distances is greater than the cable length, reduce the VOP; if it is smaller, increase it.
How should the SPRINGBOK TRACKER PRO and its test leads be cleaned and inspected?SPRINGBOK
Dust is removed from the housing and connectors with a lint-free cloth; for damp cleaning, use only a slightly damp cloth with the instrument switched off and the charger unplugged. Harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners can damage the front panel overlay. The instrument and accessories should be inspected regularly for damage, wear and missing parts – after every use if operated in harsh, dusty or wet environments; test leads with damaged insulation or bent or broken clips should be replaced. The instrument contains no user-serviceable parts.
What does the AUTO SEARCH function on the SPRINGBOK TRACKER PRO do?SPRINGBOK
AUTO SEARCH moves cursor 3 to the largest impedance mismatch on the trace and zooms in on it. If the far end of the cable is disconnected from the cable plant, the largest reflection is the cable end, so the cursor moves to the end. If the cable is still connected, the cursor moves to the largest mismatch along the line.
What are the differences between the SPRINGBOK TRACKER STD and TRACKER PRO time-domain reflectometers?SPRINGBOK
The TRACKER STD (manufacturer's designation “Tracker”) and the TRACKER PRO differ mainly in range, pulse widths and memory:
| Feature | TRACKER STD | TRACKER PRO |
|---|---|---|
| Max. cable length | 2,000 ft (approx. 610 m) | 15,965 ft (approx. 4,866 m) at 85% VOP |
| Pulse widths | 5 and 20 ns | 2, 5, 20, 50, 100 and 500 ns |
| Signal filtering | 1, 2 | 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64 |
| Waveform memory | 10 multi-pulse waveforms | 60 multi-pulse waveforms |
| Colour touchscreen | 5 in, 800 × 480 | 7 in, 800 × 480 |
| NiMH battery | 2,100 mAh | 4,200 mAh |
| Weight | 2 lbs 10 oz (approx. 1.2 kg) | 3 lbs 10 oz (approx. 1.6 kg) |
Both share a USB connection, Bluetooth 4.0 and a distance accuracy of 0.44 ft at 99% VOP down to 0.18 ft at 40% VOP, among other things.
Which cables can the SPRINGBOK TRACKER PRO test?SPRINGBOK
The TRACKER PRO is a metallic time-domain reflectometer: it tests all types of paired metallic cables – twisted pair as well as coaxial cable – for opens, shorts and impedance mismatches. The cable is connected to the BNC socket on the front panel; for coaxial cable with an F connector, a BNC-to-F adapter is used.
How does an open or a short appear on the SPRINGBOK TRACKER PRO waveform?SPRINGBOK
The TRACKER PRO sends pulses down the cable; at impedance discontinuities some or all of the energy is reflected back and displayed as a waveform with a distance readout. The following applies:
- Open: the reflection has the same polarity as the output pulse and points upwards.
- Short: the reflection has the opposite polarity and points downwards.
- Inductive faults and points of higher impedance show upwards, capacitive faults and points of lower impedance downwards.
A cable with constant impedance that is properly terminated absorbs all of the energy and produces no reflection.
