Which material of a Volta cable pulling grip suits which application?Volta Macchine
  • Galvanised steel: the standard material, suitable for all types of installation.
  • Stainless steel: for use in the petrochemical industry, the food industry and under water.
  • Nylon, Kevlar® or Dyneema®: where non-conductive or antimagnetic grips are required; they are light and in some cases reach high breaking loads.

Steel grips are braided from strands of 7, 19, 49 or 133 individual wires; the strands used depend on the gripping properties, the required breaking load and the intended application.

What is a Volta anti-twist swivel used for and what is a rigid rope connector used for?Volta Macchine
  • Anti-twist swivel with compensating joint: it is fitted between the winch rope and the cable pulling grip and compensates the twisting that occurs during pulling. It is also available with a ball joint.
  • Rigid rope connector: connects the winch rope with a pulling rope made of synthetic material or galvanised braided rope. It is designed to run over the grooved bullwheels of capstan cable winches.

How do Volta cable pulling grips for civil installations differ from those for industrial installations?Volta Macchine

The two ranges differ in the connection and in the cable diameter:

  • Civil installations: Only this range includes grips with an M4, M5 or M6 threaded connection, for example with eye and M5 pulling head, for cables from ø 4 to 31 mm, plus non-conductive nylon grips up to ø 40 mm. The threaded grips are among the accessories for fish tapes and fibreglass rods with the same sleeve thread, e.g. M5 for GIRAVOLTA and VOLTAFOX.
  • Industrial installations: grips with an eye or a thimble, e.g. JST112 with one thimble for cables from ø 10 to 150 mm. For pulling with the winch rope, an anti-twist swivel is fitted between rope and grip to compensate the twisting that occurs during pulling.

All Volta cable pulling grips are braided by hand.

Was this helpful? Thanks for your feedback!
How long can a Volta cable pulling grip be used?Volta Macchine

A cable pulling grip is not a disposable item, but it has a limited service life. This depends strongly on the field of application and the working cycles, especially under extreme conditions such as stringing overhead conductors, installing underground high-voltage cables or laying submarine cables.

Check every grip carefully before its next use. Damaged or even slightly frayed grips must be replaced.

What is the difference between VOLTANYL fish tapes with crimped and with interchangeable end fittings?Volta Macchine

The VOLTANYL fish tapes ø 4 mm are available in three versions, each with a spring guide head with eye and a pulling head with eye:

  • TP and NP: end fittings crimped on directly.
  • TI and NI: interchangeable end fittings with M4 thread.
  • TF and NF: interchangeable M4 end fittings, with the thread directly on the rod.

For ø 4 mm, TP, TI and TF are made of nylon (RAL 9002), NP, NI and NF of PERLON® (RAL 9017). The nylon tape has a breaking load of 280 kg and a working pulling force of 120 kg, the PERLON® tape 450 kg and 130 kg. VOLTANYL ø 3 mm is available with crimped or with interchangeable M4 end fittings.

What should be observed when selecting and fitting a Volta cable pulling grip?Volta Macchine
  • Select the grip by cable diameter, cable type (underground cable, overhead line, submarine cable) and type of installation (static or dynamic). Every Volta grip is embossed with its diameter range and breaking load.
  • Always insert the cable over the entire working length of the grip; only then does the mesh achieve full grip on the cable sheath.
  • Place laterally open grips around the cable and lace them with the two binding wires supplied, starting at the top and crossing through the mesh, evenly tight along the whole length, then knot the ends.
  • The edges must neither gap nor overlap; either means that the wrong diameter was chosen.
