ELEKTRONIKA – TDR cable fault locators and ECFL30 from Budapest
ELEKTRONIKAhttps://www.elektronika.hu/
ELEKTRONIKA of Budapest has been building measuring instruments for cable networks for more than seventy years. SEMPERDEAL carries three of its instruments: the ETDR10 A-C time domain reflectometer for coaxial cables and district heating lines, the ETDR10B for multi-core twisted and balanced cables, and the ECFL30 multifunction cable fault locator.
The ECFL30 combines a measuring bridge, TDR, multimeter and pair tester in one unit and covers fault location on telecom copper pairs, up to Graaf measurements on soaked cables. The TDR units locate breaks, short circuits and wet joints from half a metre away. The ETDR10 A-C comes with a PC program for transferring test results via USB and post-processing them.
Anyone looking for an alternative to the well-known cable fault locators will find robust technology with straightforward operation here.

How is the propagation velocity set on the ELEKTRONIKA ETDR10 A-C and ETDR10B?ELEKTRONIKA
The propagation velocity can be entered either as V/2 (45 to 150 m/µs) or as VOP (30 to 99%). The simplest way is to select the cable type from the cable library, which holds standard and user-defined cable types, and to set a range covering the cable length: the instrument then sets V/2, gain, pulse width and the distance-dependent compensation of cable attenuation automatically. There are 10 memory locations for user-stored propagation values and 30 for standard cable parameters; the instrument can also calculate the propagation velocity automatically.
How can intermittent cable faults be found with the ELEKTRONIKA ETDR10 A-C and ETDR10B?ELEKTRONIKA
Both instruments provide the LONG TIME mode for loose contacts and intermittent faults. In addition, the current waveform can be displayed together with a stored waveform or as the difference between the two.
Which bridge method suits which conductor fault on the ECFL30?ELEKTRONIKA
On the ECFL30, the following bridge methods are recommended, among others:
| Method | recommended if … |
|---|---|
| Murray | only one wire of the pair is faulty |
| Küpfmüller | both wires of the pair are faulty |
| 3-point | a healthy auxiliary wire is available |
| 3-point (a-b) | the insulation between the wires is faulty and two healthy auxiliary wires are available |
| Interruption measurement (active bridge) | the loop resistance is above 10 kΩ and the wire-to-earth capacitances differ |
For Murray, Küpfmüller and 3-point (a-b): active bridge if the disturbing voltage is low, passive bridge if it is high. If the disturbing voltage fluctuates, the repeated Küpfmüller measurement or the Graaf method is suitable.
What voltage protection does the line input of the ELEKTRONIKA ETDR10B have?ELEKTRONIKA
The line input of the ETDR10B is protected up to 230 V RMS (50 Hz) or 500 V DC. For testing live low-voltage power cables, ELEKTRONIKA offers the EBF 20 blocking filter as an accessory that protects the instrument's inputs.
How close and how far can the ELEKTRONIKA ETDR10 A-C and ETDR10B locate cable faults?ELEKTRONIKA
Both instruments have ten ranges from 16 m to 16,000 m (at V/2 = 100); the length actually achievable depends on the cable. With the short 3 to 10 ns pulses, faults as near as about 0.5 m can be located; for long cables, pulses from 30 ns to 6 µs are available, and the pulse width changes with the range. Fault location accuracy is 0.2% of the range, resolution 0.3% without and 0.06% with zoom.
What are the differences between the ELEKTRONIKA ETDR10 A-C and ETDR10B time-domain reflectometers?ELEKTRONIKA
The ETDR10 A-C is a single-channel TDR for coaxial cables and the ETDR10B a dual-channel TDR for balanced cables, i.e. low-voltage power cables and unloaded telecom cables:
| Feature | ETDR10 A-C | ETDR10B |
|---|---|---|
| Line impedances | 50, 75 and 93 Ω (coaxial) | 100, 135 and 150 Ω (balanced) |
| Line connection | three BNC sockets | 4 mm banana sockets for L1 and L2 |
| Channels | single channel | dual channel, e.g. comparison of two pairs and location of crosstalk points |
| Display | colour TFT, 320 × 240 pixels | colour TFT, 5 in |
| Weight | 0.8 kg | approx. 1.2 kg |
Both offer ten ranges from 16 m to 16 km (at V/2 = 100; the achievable length depends on the cable), pulse widths from 3 ns to 6 µs, memory for 50 waveforms, 10 setups, 10 user-stored propagation values and 30 standard cable parameters, data transfer via USB, WLAN or USB stick, a lithium-ion battery with at least 10 hours of operating time and IP54 protection.
What are the two line inputs of the ELEKTRONIKA ETDR10B used for?ELEKTRONIKA
The ETDR10B has two balanced inputs, L1 and L2. They allow two pairs to be displayed together or compared as a difference (modes L1 & L2 and L1 - L2). In XTALK mode, the instrument transmits on one pair and receives on the other to locate the crosstalk point; XTALK AUTO does this automatically.
Which measuring method of the ELEKTRONIKA ECFL30 suits which cable condition?ELEKTRONIKA
The ECFL30 combines four measuring methods:
| Method | Use |
|---|---|
| Active bridge | fault location where disturbing voltages are low |
| Passive Wheatstone bridge | fault location where disturbing voltages are high |
| Graaf fault location | totally water-soaked cable where disturbing voltages are usually high and fluctuating; end-to-end master-slave measurement with the ECFL 30S additional unit |
| Time-domain reflectometer (TDR) | low-impedance faults and splits causing crosstalk between pairs |
The automatic survey of pair condition shows which method fits: it measures disturbing voltage, capacitance, loop and wire resistances and insulation resistances in order to find the most suitable fault location method.
